Book AppointmentWhat Is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry is exactly what it sounds like—it occurs when your eyes aren’t producing enough lubrication to keep them moist and comfortable.
Symptoms of Dry Eye
- A stinging, burning or scratchy sensation in your eyes
- Stringy mucus in or around your eyes
- Sensitivity to light
- Eye redness
- A sensation of having something in your eyes
- Difficulty wearing contact lenses
- Difficulty with nighttime driving
- Watery eyes, which is the body’s response to the irritation of dry eyes
- Blurred vision or eye fatigue
Decreased Tear Production
Reasons for decreased tear production are varied and might include:
- Contact lens wear
- Normal aging
- Medications such as antihistamines or antidepressants
- Medical conditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or Sjögren’s Syndrome
- Recent laser vision correction surgery
Poor Quality Tears
Good quality tears depend on a balanced and effective tear film. The tear film is made up of 3 layers—a mucus layer to spread the tears over the surface of the eye, a water layer to hydrate the eye, and an oil layer to keep the water from evaporating too quickly. If there’s an imbalance in the tear film, dry eye syndrome can result.
The tiny glands along the top and bottom edges of the eyelids, called the meibomian glands, are responsible for producing the oil layer of your tear film. When we diagnose dry eye syndrome, we’ll also look at the condition of your meibomian glands and recommend treatment options if they’re not functioning properly.
What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is an eyelid disorder characterized by the obstruction or inflammation of the meibomian glands. These glands are responsible for secreting oils that lubricate the eyes and prevent your tears from evaporating.
It is one of the most common causes of dry eye, but we offer several strategies to help manage its symptoms and provide you with comfortable vision.
TearLab: Diagnosing Dry Eye
The TearLab system helps us diagnose dry eye with a technique that measures your tear osmolarity, or how much salt content there is in your tears.
Tear osmolarity is a comprehensive way to not only diagnose dry eye, but also determine what may be contributing to your discomfort.
LipiScan® Dynamic Meibomian Imager
The first dedicated HD meibomian gland imager designed for efficiency and versatility.
With a small footprint and user-friendly design, the LipiScan with Dynamic Meibomian Imaging (DMI) was designed to make high-definition meibography accessible for any practice.
The durable yet lightweight device was designed for workflow maximization and easy integration into busy practices. Quickly image an eyelid in about 10 seconds.
LipiFlow®: The Technological Approach to Relieving Dry Eye
LipiFlow provides comprehensive relief from dry eye symptoms caused by MGD, and we’re proud to be one of the only practices in Plymouth to offer it!
Using a pair of applicators that apply gentle heat and massage techniques on both sides of your eyelids, LipiFlow technology can help melt blockages in your meibomian glands and promote a healthy flow of oils to your tear film.
The treatment takes only minutes to complete, providing you with the comfortable, clear vision you deserve.
Scleral Contact Lenses for Dry Eye
Scleral lenses are large, gas-permeable contact lenses that rest on the sclera (whites) of your eye. Their design allows the center of the lens to vault over your cornea, leaving a space between your eyes and the lens that acts as a tear reservoir.
This reservoir can then help reduce the risk of experiencing pain, irritation, and redness caused by dry eye. We can also prescribe scleral lenses to help provide crisp, clear vision to those with keratoconus.
Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs are tiny medical devices that are inserted into the tear ducts, known as puncta, to block the drainage of tears. They can help maintain moisture in the eyes and relieve symptoms associated with dry eye syndrome.
Nutraceuticals for Dry Eye
Benchmark Eye Clinic carries a range of nutraceutical solutions for dry eye. These products can help stimulate oil development in your meibomian glands, addressing dry eye symptoms associated with meibomian gland dysfunction. Some of the nutraceuticals we offer include HydroEye omega-3 supplements, which can help support oil production in your meibomian glands.
